Overview -
Becoming a doctor in India is quite challenging, often requiring high merit or significant financial resources. Many students worldwide pursue their dreams and careers by migrating to various destinations, particularly from the East to the West, attracted by better university infrastructure, global exposure, and specific specializations and career prospects, especially in the field of medicine.
Securing an MBBS seat in Indian government colleges is one of the toughest tasks globally due to limited infrastructure and faculty availability in medical colleges. Despite government reforms aimed at increasing MBBS seat availability by relaxing norms for opening new medical colleges and faculty recruitment criteria, obtaining an MBBS seat remains a dream for many aspiring students.
According to government reports published on various platforms, a significant percentage of faculties, both clinical and non-clinical, are unavailable in medical colleges opened in the last five years, severely impacting medical students' learning experiences. Each year, the prospects of securing an MBBS seat become slimmer for medical aspirants. In 2023, approximately 18,000 Indian students are enrolled in medical universities globally, which accounts for over one-third of private medical college students in India.
Difficulties in Obtaining a Government Seat in India -
India has long struggled with challenges in its medical education system, such as the gap between education and healthcare delivery, high education costs, underutilization of resources, and the variety of entrance exams for medical seats. Globally, efforts have been ongoing to improve the doctor-to-population ratio for better access to healthcare services.
In 2023, over 21 million students collectively appeared for India's prestigious medical entrance exam, NEET-UG, competing for MBBS seats in 706 government and private medical colleges. Over the past five years, the government and private sectors have established 185 medical colleges with 23,000 seats. Despite these endeavors, the likelihood of securing an MBBS seat in India decreased from 6.68% to 5.29% during this period. This decline is attributed to the increasing number of NEET UG aspirants and the slow progress in expanding the medical education infrastructure to meet the growing demand for MBBS seats.
Education Pattern of MBBS Abroad -
Every country has a varied education system to deliver medical education to its students. Most Asian countries were colonies of the Western world in the last 150-200 Years. These countries adopted modern medicine (Allopathic Medicine) education from the Western world. Each country developed its Medical education based on community needs and long-term vision for the healthcare system post-independence.
