Medical Education in Malaysia

Malaysia has a rich medical education history, with Singapore establishing the first medical school in the region in 1905. After Malaysia gained independence, Kuala Lumpur saw the creation of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Malaya in 1963. Currently, Malaysia hosts 32 public and private medical schools, all offering a 5-year undergraduate program. Some private institutions have expanded globally through twinning or credit-transfer programs.

All medical schools in Malaysia must obtain accreditation from the National Accreditation Board and the Malaysian Medical Council. The cost of MBBS in Malaysia is comparable to that of Indian medical colleges, ranging from 55,000 to 110,000 MYR (equivalent to 10–20 lacs in INR) annually. Malaysia is known as the third safest country in Asia and the fourth most affordable country for international students.


Is MBBS degree from Mauritius recognized by the NMC?

Following the NMC's notification on November 18, 2021, Indian students planning to pursue MBBS in Malaysia are curious about the recognition of the Malaysian MBBS degree by the National Medical Commission (NMC). As per NMC guidelines, the MBBS program should last more than 4.5 years, including a dedicated year for clinical rotation or internship within the same college. However, one major challenge with MBBS in Malaysia is the limited internship opportunities for international students.

Before 2021, Indian students studying MBBS in Malaysia used to complete their internships in India, which the NMC prohibited in their November 18 notification. It's important to note that there are no NMC-approved medical colleges in Malaysia that fully comply with NMC guidelines.

Obtaining a license to practice in India after completing MBBS in Malaysia is not possible, so it's crucial to consider this before choosing this option. However, a medical degree recognized in Malaysia is accepted in countries like the USA, UK, Canada, etc., for pursuing medical PG programs. The Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), the regulatory body for medical education in Malaysia, recognizes all medical universities in the country.
