The sales figures for July 2019 are in … and 779 units separate the top two vehicles as the battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie continues.

According to Naamsa, July 2019’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 46 077 units, representing a fall of 3,7 percent, year on year. The light commercial segment (13 852 units), meanwhile, showed a gain of 2,9 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2018. So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the seventh month of 2019?

Well, the Toyota Hilux – bolstered by the arrival of the GR-Sport and Legend 50 derivatives – remained at the very top of the table, with the updated Ford Ranger (including the flagship Raptor) again having to settle for second place (after the first seven months of 2019, the Japanese bakkie finds itself a full 8 912 units ahead of its Blue Oval rival).
